The villages in this area are ancient, very poor and depopulated. Many houses are abandoned, and others are crumbling. It is mainly the elderly who are left.
This extract is a typical encounter:
Chickens scatter as I bump into town down a rocky track. In the centre of the square sitting outside a closed up café are a couple of old men, leaning on their sticks surveying the empty streets. The same in so many small villages and towns in Turkey and throughout much of the world. I wave as I pass and sometimes I get the acknowledgment of a wave back, but more often the nonchalance of a vacant stare which passes right through me.
